Can you Buy Pure Ephedrine HCL Diet Pils without Guaifenesin?

Pure EphedrineCan you still legally buy pure ephedrine in stores in the US, Canada, Australia or the UK?

Pure ephedrine HCL or ephedrine sulfate is a much sought-after ingredient by dieters and bodybuilders who use it to boost weight loss results or who take it in an ECA stack.

Many forms of this drug that are easy to acquire today are impure and contain additives like guaifenesin, an expectorant that is used in asthma medications.

The presence of this additive is undesirable for people who want to take this ingredient as a fat burner. Guaifenesin is a muscle relaxant with anti-convulsive properties and has its own risk of side effects.

Bodybuilders who want to use ephedrine diet pills to enhance energy and athletic performance often complain about how difficult it is to find pure versions of this compound online.

What do you need to know about purchasing pure ephedrine HCL over the internet and why is this ingredient so hard to find in local stores? Click here to buy ephedra supplements online legally without a prescription.

What is Pure Ephedrine?

Depending on the source and product used, ephedrine may be included as an ingredient in a drug in a number of different forms:

  • L-Ephedrine – C10H15NO
  • Ephedrine hydrochloride (HCl) – C10H16CINO
  • Ephedrine sulfate – C20H32N2O6S

Technically, only the L-Ephedrine form is pure. The other forms contain hydrochloric acid and sulfate respectively.

Usually, all three of these forms are viewed as “pure ephedrine” for the purposes of use in bodybuilding stacks.

Ephedrine was originally derived as an alkaloid from the Ephedra Sinica plant. Some products may provide it in a herbal extract form. However, most of the formulations of this ingredient in drugs and over-the-counter remedies are synthetically manufactured (made in a lab).

Can You Buy Pure Ephedrine?

Previously, there were a number of tableted products available in the United States that claimed to contain pure ephedrine HCL or sulfate. However, federal and state regulations now require that this product be distributed in a complex form with other ingredients.

These regulations were not put in place to frustrate bodybuilders who want to use the real thing. Instead, these laws are intended to prevent the criminal diversion of ephedrine for the manufacturing of methamphetamine.

Many dieters, athletes and bodybuilders who use this product are unaware of the fact that both ephedrine and pseudoephedrine are used to make the street drug “Crystal Meth”.

In 1988, the US passed the Chemical Diversion and Trafficking Act which made it illegal to import, export, produce or distribute bulk ephedrine powder. This legislation was designed to make it harder for clandestine labs to buy the ingredient for use in manufacturing illegal street drugs.

However, these labs soon switched to using pure ephedrine HCL in tablet form which was exempt under the law. According to one US government report, “Approximately 48,000 25 mg. ephedrine tablets are required to extract one kilo of pure ephedrine.”

To prevent this practice from continuing, stronger restrictions were put in place that limited the sale of any pure forms of the ingredient. Many states instituted laws that required ephedrine to be sold either in a softgel format or in combination with other ingredients.

In a number of locations, it is currently only legal to sell ephedrine HCL in a maximum of 12.5 mg tablets with a minimum of 200 mg guaifenesin per pill. These pills must also be sold in blister packs.

The Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act of 2005 (CMEA) was also introduced which made it illegal to buy more than 3.6 grams of ephedrine base per day or 9 grams per month. This act also required purchasers to be over 18 years of age, show photo ID, have their identify and address tracked in a central logbook.

Bodybuilders and people who want to lose weight may find these restrictions to be onerous, but they are necessary to reduce the illegal use of these products.

Canadian Sales

Canada is one of the few countries that continues to allow the sale of pure forms of ephedrine HCL. However, products sold here are restricted to a maximum dose of 8 mg per pill with a serving size suggestion of no more than 32 mg per day.

In Canada, this product is available over the counter without a prescription as a nasal decongestant. It cannot be promoted for weight loss, energy, appetite suppression or any other off-label uses.

US customers who want to import or ship the product to their residence should be aware that the Canadian government has stepped up enforcement action preventing such international sales.

While small amounts for personal use may be allowed to be carried across the border, if you are bringing too much of this ingredient back to the USA you could face serious legal troublem.

How Does Ephedrine Work in the Body?

Ephedrine HCL is used medicinally in the treatment of allergies, asthma, chest tightness, bronchial conditions and respiratory tract infections.

It is also used off-label because of its stimulant effects. However, the same energy-boosting properties it exhibits can also result in serious side effects. How exactly does this ingredient work and why is it so controversial?

Ephedrine is classified as a vasopressor and bronchodilator. It’s a sympathomimetic amine that triggers certain responses by activating adrenergic receptors in the body.

Use of this product increases norepinephrine activity in the brain, stimulating alpha and beta-adrenergic receptors that can influence:

  • Vasoconstriction of arteries. The narrowing of these blood vessels increases blood pressure.
  • Stimulating the heart muscle to be harder and faster.
  • Dilating airways found in the lungs as well as in the smooth muscle tissue lining sinuses and nasal passages, facilitating greater oxygen intake and delivery of oxygen throughout the body.

In medical scenarios, ephedrine can be found in a number of decongestant medications, including those for the treatment of asthma, and in surgical scenarios to treat hypotension.

This drug is also used off-label because it can increase energy metabolism, promote mental and physical stamina, and act as an appetite suppressant. Users will take it because of its focus-enhancing effects, ability to increase certain facets of athletic performance and for its positive effects on motivation and mood.

Ephedrine diet pills are believed to work by stimulating the metabolism, causing greater thermogenesis. When you take this product, your body oxidizes more fat and converts it into heat.

While multiple studies have found a weight loss effect associated with use of pure ephedrine or ephedra extracts, the total reduction in body fat mass is approximately 1-2 pounds per month. This is similar to the results possible with proper diet and exercise.

Many users take it to help them kick-start a weight management program. However, there is considerable risk of side effects due to the stimulant mechanisms of this drug.

Dangers of Pure Ephedrine

Pure ephedrine can contribute to a number of side effects for individuals, especially in those who are more sensitive stimulants.

Even when used properly by healthy individuals, adverse effects such as the following have been reported:

  • Dizziness
  • Headaches (may be severe)
  • Nausea or stomach discomfort
  • Anxiety or nervousness
  • Heart palpitations
  • Racing heart
  • Dry mouth
  • Excessive sweating
  • Diarrhea
  • Insomnia

More serious adverse effects can and have occurred. Using this product for long periods of time can increase the risk of excessive strain on the heart and cardiovascular system.

Taking high dosages, combining pure ephedrine with other stimulants (such as caffeine or yohimbine), and using this product in conjunction with prescription medications can all increase the frequency and severity of dangerous side effects.

This product should not be used by anyone who has a history of heart problems or individuals who are at risk for the development of cardiovascular disease. Consult with a doctor to learn about the full scope of contraindications and drug interactions possible with ephedrine HCL tablets.

According to some herbalist sources, use of pure ephedrine can promote a greater risk of side effects compared to use of the whole ephedra sinica herb. Currently, it is legal to buy herbal preparations of ephedra so long as they are dispensed by qualified herbal medicine practitioners.
