Methylzene Supplement Review – BANNED Ingredients Warning

MethylzeneMethylzene is a weight loss supplement that is manufactured by Delta Health. It is promoted as a turbo-charged thermogenic that “re-sculpts your body and ramps up energy like crazy!”

Methylzene contains approximately 50 mg of ephedra extract as well as other ingredients designed to stimulate fat burning and greater metabolism.

While ephedra diet pills that contain ephedrine alkaloids have been banned in the United States, this supplement is legal because it does not contain any of the prohibited alkaloids. Instead, it replaces this ingredient with other compounds that are claimed to have a similar effect.

Methylzene Product Description

Methylzene is sold by a number of specialty retailers that carry ephedra-based fat burners and energy boosters. Manufactured by Delta Health Products, this product claims to

  • Promote fast fat burn
  • Offer fast and long-lasting action
  • Enhances extreme strength

The product is known as a stack, quite popular among weightlifters, bodybuilders, dieters, and athletes for its potential to aid in energy production, weight loss, and stimulation – both physical and cognitive.

In the day before ephedra with ephedrine products were banned by the FDA, ECA stacks (ephedrine, caffeine, and aspirin) were commonly used to strip excess body fat, provide intense pre-workout energy boosts and to promote a surge in motivation and mental drive.

Because ephedrine alkaloids are now banned in products that are targeted for fat loss, this supplement has provided a source of ephedra extract that does not contain any of these chemical adulterants.

Instead, related alkaloids like Methylsynephrine, Yohimbine HCL, Phenylethylamine HCL and Theobromine are used to simulate the same mechanisms of action.

But given that ephedrine diet supplements were banned due to their potential dangerous effects on health, it begs the question whether this product is safe for you to use or not.

Methylzene Ingredients

Methylzene ingredients are numerous. This fat burning product contains a number of compounds that have a stimulating effect.

When it comes to the ephedra extract (50 mg), however, the product does not state from which species the ephedra extract is cultivated.

Consumers should note that some ephedra species are more potent than others, which will be reflected in the active ingredients of the extract itself.

Other stimulative ingredients found in Methylzene include but are not limited to:

  • 250 mg caffeine anhydrous (a dried, powdered form of caffeine)
  • 25 mg methylsynephrine
  • 20 mg phenylethylamine HCl
  • 100 mg of citrus aurantium (providing 30% synephrine)

Other ingredients designed to boost efficacy also include:

  • White willow bark (a natural analgesic that substitutes the aspirin component of ECA stacks)
  • 1.5 mg Yohimbine HCl
  • 15 mg Green tea
  • 100 mg Panax ginseng
  • 25 mg Hoodia extract (from cactus)
  • 100 mg Ginger root
  • 25 mg Cayenne
  • 10 mg Theobromine

Mechanism of Action

The mechanism of action of components in Methylzene is to promote thermogenesis, which is the body’s ability to convert energy into heat. This supplement causes your metabolic rate to be increased, which may have some benefits, but also requires caution when taking.

Taken alone, some of the ingredients can be quite stimulative by themselves, and when combined with other stimulants, can trigger a number of unpleasant side effects.

Caffeine acts as a stimulant for a number of receptors found in the brain that in turn affect behavior of the central nervous system.

The effects of caffeine can last anywhere from three to four hours for some. The Mayo Clinic has deemed that up to 400 mg of caffeine daily is typically safe for most adults.

When purchasing ECA stacks or thermogenic (heat-producing) products however, be aware that the overall stimulative effect of other components can increase dramatically, whether they are directly related to caffeine or are another stimulant entirely.

This is because these ingredient potentiate each other, resulting in a synergistic effect wherein the combination is significant more potent than each individual ingredient.

For example, methylsynephrine, otherwise known as Oxilofrine, has garnered the negative attention of the US FDA and other government watch groups.

It’s a substance that is increasingly found in dietary supplements that the FDA claims does not “meet the statutory definition of a dietary ingredient” and is therefore adulterated or deemed potentially unsafe. They state that such ingredients have been either misbranded, mislabeled, not listed, or are outright misleading. [1]

The primary mechanism of action of methylsynephrine (Oxilofrine) is as an anti-tussin (anti-cough) medication ingredient. It also increases blood pressure and stimulates heart rate.

It has not been approved for use in the United States as a prescription drug or even as a dietary supplement. It is banned by numerous sporting organizations. [2]

Where Can I Buy Methylzene?

Methylzene is prevalently sold on a number of online websites that include but are not limited to:

  • Ephedra Warehouse: average price $80, although often found on sale for around $40 (100 capsules)
  • iSupplements: average price $60, same number of capsules
  • A1Supplements: average price $35 (100 capsules)
  • Black Diamond Supplements: regular price averages $70, often found on sale for approximately $35 (100 capsules)

A number of other sellers in the US can be found on the Internet, but some limit their shipping to the contiguous US. Because of its increasing popularity, some websites mention that they are out of stock.

Safety Considerations

Any product, regardless of whether the ingredients or natural or herbal or not can cause a number of side effects and adverse reactions. The same applies to the ingredients of Methylzene.

Weight loss stimulants like those found in Methylzene that trigger accelerated activity of the central nervous system and its functions involving the sympathetic nervous system can affect heart rate, respiration rate, and everything from digestion to metabolism and even muscle function.

Individuals who are more sensitive to caffeine or stimulant products may find that the combination of ingredients is a bit strong. Some of the more dangerous side effects associated with use can include but are not limited to:

  • Heart palpitations
  • Accelerated heart rate (tachycardia)
  • Severe headache (caused by dilation or constriction of blood vessels in the scalp and supplying the brain)
  • Dizziness

The instructions for use are to take one capsule with meals, and not to exceed two capsules a day.

It is recommended that new users start with one capsule, preferably prior to a workout in order to help expel that often overwhelming burst of energy or nervous energy that such products provide.

A number of warnings are listed on the products label. Such products are not generally recommended for anyone under 18 years of age, although the Methylzene product defines that limit as 21 years of age. Pregnant or breast-feeding women should avoid.

It is also strongly recommended that Methylzene not be used if a person has a diagnosed medical condition or is taking any type of prescription drug, over-the-counter medication, or even herbal products in the treatment of that condition.

While Methylzene may be attractive for some looking for fast weight loss and results, always use such products with caution and resist the urge to exceed dosage recommendations or length of recommended use.
