How to Get Ephedrine Legally

Interest in ephedrine and ephedra weight loss products has not declined in recent years. This diet pill ingredient still remains one of the most sought-after among athletes, dieters and bodybuilders.

Ephedrine refers to a natural alkaloid derived from the Ephedra Sinica plant. This alkaloid (along with the related pseudoephedrine) produced many of the physiological effects associated with taking ephedra fat burners.

It is a stimulant alkaloid that increases activation of the nervous system, boosts heart rate, enhances energy levels and promotes greater caloric expenditure. Ephedrine has been shown to increase weight loss results by stimulating the metabolism and suppressing appetite cravings.

In the 1980s and 1990s, millions of US consumers were believed to have taken ephedra diet pills containing this alkaloid. Products such as Hydroxycut, Xenadrine, Metabolife, Yellow Swarm and Mini Thins were well-known brand names.

While effective for fat loss, ephedrine also comes with a serious risk of side effects. In a research analysis conducted by the RAND corporation, consumption of this ingredient was associated with “3 deaths, 2 myocardial infarctions, 2 cerebrovascular/stroke events, 1 seizure, and 3 psychiatric cases.”

The FDA concluded that this product posed an unreasonably high risk of serious adverse events and injuries. They decided to make the use of this ingredient illegal in dietary supplements.

After the ephedrine/ephedra ban of 2004, hundreds of supplemental products were taken off of store shelves. This ban specifically pertained to products labelled as dietary supplements. It did not cover products sold as over-the-counter medications.

Ephedrine HCL and sulfate can still be found in some medicinal products, such as asthma medications and nasal decongestants. This use comports with the traditional use of the ephedra sinica plant extract to treat breathing issues.

These breathing remedies are available to buy in many parts of the USA without a prescription. Bodybuilders and dieters often look to these products to provide them with a legal source of real ephedrine alkaloids.

However, many of these products contain other ingredients that counteract the effectiveness of this compound for weight loss. Off-label use of these bronchodilators for fat loss is not recommended.

Products Containing Ephedrine For Sale

In the United States and in many countries around the world including Canada, Australia and the UK, individuals can still find products containing small amounts of ephedrine and/or pseudoephedrine.

Under US law, both of these ephedra alkaloids are regulated as controlled substances. There are special requirements that must be met by manufacturers, retailers and purchasers in order to legally buy oral ephedrine tablets.

Purchasers may not require a prescription from their doctor, but products containing ephedrine and pseudoephedrine are carefully monitored today. This is because the two components are common precursors used in the manufacture of methamphetamine.

To prevent the diversion of these ingredients for use in manufacturing illegal drugs, dosage restrictions have been put in place as well as formulation requirements.

For example, in some states, you can only buy ephedrine in a soft gel or liquid capsule product. In other states, the maximum dose per tablet is 12.5 mg with 200 mg of guaifenesin.

There are a number of products that contain this ingredient for the treatment of lung or breathing problems. It is found in asthma products, cold and flu formulas, and some allergy medications.

Some of the common brand names used today include:

  • Primatene tablets containing approximately 12.5 mg of ephedrine hydrochloride with 200 mg guaifenesin per tablet.
  • Bronkaid which provides includes a combination of 25 mg ephedrine sulfate and guaifenesin, which acts as an expectorant.
  • Generic ephedrine sulfate solution 0.25% – Nasal drop liquid formulation available only with a prescription.
  • Mudrane GG which is a multi-ingredient anti-asthmatic medication that includes a combination of ephedrine, guaifenesin, phenobarbital systemic and aminophylline.
  • Quad-Tuss (Rynatuss, Rentamine) an upper respiratory multi-ingredient formula containing ephedrine, ammonium chloride, chlorpheniramine, dextromethorphan, ipecac, and phenylephrine systemic.

The availability of these medications varies depending where you live. Different countries may have different formulation requirements and specifications.

Note that only one of the products listed above provides pure ephedrine and this product requires a prescription. All of the others include additive and other ingredients that are not recommended for use as weight loss aids.

Canada is one of the few countries that still allow products containing pure Ephedrine HCl to be sold for use as nasal decongestants. These products must provide a maximum of 8 mg active ingredient per pill and cannot recommend a dose of more than 32 mg per day.

Some of the brand names sold in Canada include Synergenex, Kaizen and 4EverFit. Note that if you live in the United States, it is not legal to ship these products to your home. Caandian law restricts the export of these products.

What to Expect When Purchasing Ephedrine

What can you expect when you go to a counter in a pharmacy and ask for any of the above-named or other products containing ephedrine? You will have to provide a lot of personal information and answer several questions, not the least of which is, “How do you intend to use this product?”

Laws vary from state to state. At the federal level, in the USA all purchasers of this product will be required to show photo ID demonstrating that they are at least 18 years of age.

Purchasers must provide their address, full name and may be required to submit a signature for the product. Your personal information will also be stored in a central logbook that can be accessed at any time by authorities.

Government agencies frequently look over these electronic records to ensure that no one person is visiting numerous pharmacies to purchase multiple ephedrine products within certain time frames.

Retailers are also subject to a large number of regulations, including requirements on how the product can be stored, how it should be dispensed, signage that must be visible in the store as well as training requirements for staff.

Pharmacies are also required to maintain electronic or manual logbooks specifying what products, how many products, and milligram strength of products containing ephedrine and/or pseudoephedrine are sold on a weekly or monthly basis.

There are purchase limitations on the amount you can buy at any one time as well as on the milligram strength of the ephedrine and/or pseudoephedrine provided in any one product. Users cannot buy more than 3.6 grams per day or 9 grams per 30-day period.

If you do buy more than this amount, you may find yourself facing criminal proceedings. You could be arrested, fined and given jail time.

Why are there so many precautionary measures in place? Because, as previously mentioned, ephedrine and pseudoephedrine are common ingredients used as precursors for the manufacture of illicit street drugs, primarily methamphetamine.

These rules are intended to prevent underground labs from acquiring this product to manufacture methamphetamine, but bodybuilders and other qualified purchasers are sometimes caught up in the regulations.

Cautions on Ephedrine for Nonmedical Purposes

If you do decide to buy ephedrine from your local pharmacy and follow all of the legal requirements, it is important to be aware of the risk of serious adverse effects that can occur when using this product.

A number of life-threatening side effects are associated with ephedrine use, misuse and abuse. Even at low dosages such as those found in common ephedrine OTC products, side effects can occur.

Use of this product is associated with 2-3 times greater risk of nausea, vomiting, anxiety, changes in mood, hyperactivity and heart palpitations. Adverse effects will become more severe and more frequent when taking this product in high dosages or combining it with other stimulatory ingredients including caffeine.

Ephedrine has the potential to negatively interact with a number of medications and health conditions. According to the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database, ephedrine is listed as having dangerous or major interactions with over 48 well-known drugs. Use of this product can also cause moderate interactions with an additional 275+ drugs.

Do not combine this product with medications prescribed for depression, anxiety, or cardiovascular issues. If you have taken an MAOIs, wait at least 14 days before using ephedrine or pseudoephedrine pills.

Before you decide to research where to get ephedrine in your local area, be sure to familiarize yourself with state laws regarding the sale of this product. It is recommended to consult with a doctor before taking this product to learn about the risk of adverse reactions and responsible use.
