Ephedra Fat Loss Supplements

Can you still buy ephedra dietary supplements in Pennsylvania or are they restricted as well? Ephedra is the plant from which the ephedrine compound was first isolated.

Ephedra diet pills were very popular in the 1980s and 1990s for their ability to boost energy levels and increase the metabolism. In 2004, the FDA banned the sale of any weight loss or diet supplements that contain the ingredients ephedrine or pseudoephedrine.

The ban was put in place due to thousands of reports of negative reactions in consumers using ephedra-based weight-loss products. The FDA linked several cases of heart attacks, strokes, seizures and even deaths to products that included this ingredient.

Many of these adverse events were caused by people taking excessively high dosages, using these supplements for long periods of time or combining them with other stimulant drugs. However, it was ruled that ephedrine alkaloids posed too great a risk of side effects to be allowed in fat burning products.

Many sources falsely reported that the FDA ban applied to the sale of any product that contained ephedra extract. However, there are a number of species of the ephedra plant that do not contain ephedrine alkaloids.

These species of ephedra are legal to include in dietary supplements in the United States. While many of these products are hard to find from major retailers in Pennsylvania or online stores like GNC, Amazon or eBay, you can find these products on a small number of specialty supplement retailer websites.
