Ephedrine in Florida Legal Status & Where to Buy [Review]

Ephedrine in FloridaWhat is the legal status of ephedrine in Florida and what do you need to know before buying this product to aid in weight loss?

Ephedrine is the active ingredient in ephedra, a plant that has long been used in traditional medicine in China and North America. This plant alkaloid has now been banned in dietary supplements because of its high risk of dangerous adverse effects.

However, ephedrine is still legal in other forms and is still an FDA-approved drug for the treatment of asthma, bronchial spasms and other breathing properties. There are a number of restrictions on its purchase and distribution, however.

Laws regarding sales, possession, and limitations of use of ephedrine in Florida are not the same as in every state throughout the country.

All states are mandated to adhere to Federal laws regarding ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, and other similar substances. While ephedrine is legal under federal law, it is also highly controlled and restricted.

A number of states throughout the country, including Florida, also have their own state regulations regarding limitations of product for sale as well as regulations for sale of such products. Click here to buy ephedra supplements online legally without a prescription.

Ephedrine in Florida Legal Status

In Florida, ephedrine and similar compounds such as pseudoephedrine and phenylpropanolamine are not considered controlled substances.

Therefore, in Florida, no prescription is required if it’s lawfully sold over the counter based on Federal laws and regulations. However, Florida does have some limitations, especially when combined with other active ingredients that may increase the risk of abuse.

For example, in the state of Florida, ephedrine is available in some asthma, cold and flu, and cough medications in amounts ranging 12.5 mg to 24 mg. Such products also contain anywhere from 200 mg to 400 mg of guaifenesin.

Liquid forms (oral) are limited to (in combination of active ingredients) not greater than 36 mg of ephedrine and not more than 100 mg of guaifenesin. Nasal decongestants are limited to 0.5% or under for ephedrine component.

Florida also requires that such products be located behind checkout counters and sold over-the-counter by a licensed pharmacist.

Single sales limitations per transaction are three packages. The daily sales limit of ephedrine in Florida is 3.6 g, with a limitation 30 days sales limit of 9 g. [1]

The reasons for these restrictions are to prevent any one person from purchasing too much of this substance. Most of these regulations are enforced upon the drug stores that carry this product to ensure they are being responsible with its distribution.

Buying Ephedrine in Florida

In Florida, the minimum age for purchase of ephedrine CHL or Sulfate is 18, and individuals should be prepared to display their photo identification.

A state driver license or Federal issued photo ID is required that also contain the individual’s name, birthdate, address, and photo. Some additional identification forms are acceptable.

Any person purchasing ephedrine in Florida must also be prepared to sign their name on the purchase record on paper or electronic signature capturing devices. Sales tracking information and systems are prevalently used in Florida as in other states around the country.

This information is stored in the National Precursor Log Exchange monitoring system (NPLEx). This is due to the fact that drugs containing pseudoephedrine are precursors to the manufacture of methamphetamine.

The system tracks not only date and times of purchases, but purchaser information and the total grams per package, number of packages bought, mixtures, compounds, or any preparation containing ephedrine or the aforementioned compounds such as pseudoephedrine.

Consumers should note that their signature is also linked to a unique number and that violation of sales restrictions can result in first or second offense misdemeanors. For a third offense (or more), classification as a felony in the third degree is possible.

Additional information on statutes and regulations can be found under Florida Administration Codes, Sections 893-1495. [2]

Bottom line: before considering purchase of ephedrine in Florida, or any product containing pseudoephedrine or phenylpropanolamine, be aware of legalities.

Ephedra Legal Status

While ephedrine is a restricted and controlled substance, the plant that it comes from Ephedra is not.

Many people are confused about the fact that ephedra was banned by the FDA in 2004, and yet a number of supplements continue to market it as the active ingredient in their formulations.

It’s actually not true that Ephedra is illegal in diet pills or weight loss supplements. The FDA ruled that certain version of the plant were banned, but this depends on whether they contain the ephedrine alkaloids or not.

It is still legal to use forms of ephedra extract that come from plants that don’t naturally contain any of the ephedrine phytochemical.

For example, most of the species of this plant that are native to the United States do not have high alkaloid content. They are therefore legal anywhere in the USA to buy as an ingredient in dietary supplements.

Most stores in Florida have decided against selling ephedra-based dietary supplements due to the risk of side effects. Thus, if you want to buy an ephedra extract fat loss product or pre-workout energy booster you will usually need to order from an online source.
