Ephedra Supplements

Black Mamba Hyperrush Ingredients, FDA Warning & Side Effects [Review]

Black Mamba Hyperrush EphedraBlack Mamba Hyperrush (often simply sold as Hyper Rush) is one of many ephedra products sold by online supplement stores today.

Why the name ‘Black Mamba’? The Black Mamba snake is one of the most fearsome in the reptilian world; razor-sharp fangs, super-fast, and just a few drops of its venom is potent enough to kill an adult human being.

The Black Mamba Hyperrush product label emphasizes its power and the intense rush of energy gained from use. But what’s in it that makes it different from any other ephedra-based product?

Created by Innovative Labs, Black Mamba Hyperrush is promoted as a potent fat-burner that contains 65 mg of ephedra extract in capsule form. Of course, the capsules are black, another marketing ploy that evokes images of the Black Mamba snake.

The product label claims that its hard-core triple complex promotes:

  • Long-lasting energy
  • Acute mental focus
  • Extreme weight loss

The manufacture defines Black Mamba Hyperrush as “without question, the most powerful hard-core energizer/weight management product on the market today.” It’s right there on their homepage. [1]

Does it live up to its hype? The ingredients may help determine the answer to that question.

It’s a popular product used not only by bodybuilders and athletes, but men and women seeking weight loss while at the same time minimizing loss of muscle mass.

The product contains 65 mg strength of ephedra extract. This potency can be overwhelming for those not used to any product containing ephedra, even at the lower doses found in many other products that contain 10, 25, and 27 mg options. Black Mamba Hyperrush Ingredients

Before use of any supplement, it is always recommended that consumers read the ingredient labels. This is especially true of any product that contains ephedra.

Black Mamba Hyperrush contains a variety of ingredients, including Innovative Labs’ own “proprietary blend” utilizing Thermo Rx and Extend-Rx technology. This proprietary blend is found in many of their ephedra-type products.

The supplement contains (per serving):

  • 200 mg caffeine anhydrous (dried, powder form of caffeine)
  • 65 mg ephedra extract (leaves) as found in the Thermo-Z brand)
  • 290 mg of the proprietary blend

The proprietary blend contains a variety of ingredients, totaling 150 mg. Some of these ingredients include:

  • Senegalia berlandieri extract (leaves)
  • Phenylethylamine alkaloids (roughly 8), including para (p)-Synephrine HCL
  • Yohimbine HCL

Mechanisms of Action

If you don’t know anything about the ingredients in the proprietary blend, or the other major ingredients listed, take the time to find out. For example, Synephrine HCL is a preparation that is made utilizing an ancient Chinese herb known as Bitter Orange or Citrus aurantium.

This component is popular in weight-loss dietary supplements. However, it should be noted that Synephrine is not approved by the FDA as an over-the-counter drug. Numerous warning letters were sent out by the FDA regarding ‘adulterated’ weight loss ingredients, including those containing 30% synephrine. [2]

Synephrine also acts as an appetite suppressant and as a stimulating agonist to adrenergic receptors. Bitter Orange is commonly found in a variety of over-the-counter weight-loss products.

In 2005, the FDA was asked by the scientific community to perform an analysis on Synephrine alkaloids to determine not only potential efficacy, but dangers of use. They found the product labels then – and now – are not always forthcoming about ingredients.

Following the banishment of ephedra from the dietary supplement marketplace in 2004, substitutes like Bitter Orange immediately stepped in to take its place, mainly because of one of its components: Synephrine. [3]

Two of the most common forms of the six isomers of Synephrine (para or p-isomer) is prevalent in dietary aids. However, some products also contain the m-isomer, which can increase the risk of side effects and adverse reactions.

Ephedra is found in a number of varieties, depending upon the species and origin of the plant that has been used. However, note that the ephedra extract used in this product has had certain of its active ingredients removed.

Two primary versions are found in over-the-counter dietary and weight-loss supplements today: Ephedra sinica (Ma Huang) native of Asia, and Ephedra viridis (Mormon Tea) native to the southwest and western portions of the US.

Ephedra is a plant that contains several alkaloid or chemical compound that stimulate a physiological response. The two most potent plant alkaloids: ephedrine and pseudoephedrine.

Ephedrine has an effect on the sympathetic nervous system as a stimulant to adrenergic receptors. It boosts noradrenaline activity. Basically, it behaves as a sympathomimetic amine and can boost release of norepinephrine.

Mainly, it’s been used in breathing and/or lung disorders including asthma and rhinitis.

Pseudoephedrine, the other ephedra alkaloid, is a common ingredient in a number of decongestants such as Sudafed. It’s less potent than ephedrine, but still behaves as an alpha (α) adrenergic agonist.

Ephedra portions commonly used in concoctions today include the leaves and dried stems, which are used to create tablets, extracts, teas, and capsules (both soft shelled and hard caplets).

While some species of Ephedra contain ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, not all of them do. In fact, the species that do contain these alkaloids are now banned in dietary supplements sold in the United States.

This means that the Hyperrush supplement does NOT actually contain any ephedrine in it – otherwise it could not be legally sold. While there are other alkaloids in this plant that can promote weight loss, none are as powerful as the original ephedrine diet pills. (But they are also safer than ephedrine which was potentially deadly.)

Another component found in Black Mamba Hyperrush is Senegalia berlandieri extract, made from the leaves of the plant. The manufacturer states that their Senegalia berlandieri extract can boost metabolism by approximately 22% within 45 minutes following ingestion. However, a lengthy search of clinical studies has failed to definitively determine the source of this specific claim.

This plant is native to the American Southwest (mainly Texas) and Mexico. The plant contains a number of alkaloids, including trace amounts of several amphetamines, mescaline, and nicotine.

Note: Senegalia berlandieri is toxic to livestock.

Bottom line – sometimes, it’s just not possible to determine exactly what types of compounds, substitutes, or synthetic components are found in many ephedra-type products sold today, including use of ‘mystery’ ingredients as substitutes for the banned ephedrine.

Instructions for Usage

Black Mamba Hyperrush comes in a bottle containing 90 capsules. One capsule is designated as a serving size. Because of its potency, taking more than the recommended serving size may contribute to increased risk of side effects.

It is recommended that any individual using Black Mamba Hyperrush determine their own tolerance level by taking one capsule in the morning with 8 ounces of water as well as food. Do this for approximately 7 days before even considering upping the dosage. It is strongly recommended that users do not exceed two capsules daily.

Traditionally, ephedra components that contain 8 mg or less of total alkaloids are generally considered relatively safe, but this refers to its benefits as a decongestant. Greater milligram strengths and concentrations can trigger a number of negative side effects.

Black Mamba Hyperrush Potency vs. Other Ephedra Products

The potency of Black Mamba Hyperrush 65 mg of ephedra extract is one of the higher milligram strengths of ephedra products found on the market today. As a comparison:

  • Metabothin – 10mg
  • Stimamine Yellow, Jacked Up, Lipodrene with Ephedra – 25 mg
  • Green Stinger, Red Volt, Blue Angel, Demon Seed – 27 mg
  • Stryker Black Ops – 100 mg – this product utilizes components of the Ephedra viridis plant species common in the US, which is known to have less potency than the Chinese version (Ephedra sinica/Ma Huang).

Note: It should also be noted that Ephedra viridis, the plant native to the southern United States, does not contain the ephedrine alkaloid. Otherwise known as Mormon tea or Cowboy tea, among other nicknames, the Ephedra viridis species contains pseudoephedrine, which is less potent than ephedrine, and contains a much lower concentration of ephedra alkaloid than that found in the Asian species.

Popular Purchasing Options

A wide variety of purchasing options are available to individuals looking for ephedra products today. Reviewing milligram strength, product ingredients, and feedback and comments left by previous purchasers and users of the products is always recommended.

Hundreds of ephedra and ephedra products containing the alkaloids that were most noted for triggering the accelerated weight loss (ephedrine and pseudoephedrine) are also available from a number of online sale venues around the world.

Before purchasing ephedra products from online sellers, be aware of their reputation, and most specifically, the ingredients of the products listed. Know how the ingredients listed work in the body. A number of ephedra products also contain some form of caffeine, some in extremely high milligram strengths.

Most users will not be able to find ephedra products in traditional stores such as GMC, Wal-Mart, CVS, or Walgreens pharmacies.

Most energy products available on shelves today are marketed as ephedra-free energy formulas. However, consumers may find a variety of ephedra products for sale on eBay and Amazon, depending on how they’re marketed.

Looking to specific manufacturers of ephedra products is the most common option. Manufacturers of ephedra products today include:

  • Innovative Labs
  • Schwartz Labs
  • American Generic Labs (AGL)
  • Cloma Pharma
  • GE Pharma
  • ASL
  • Hardrock

Most manufacturers recommend that their ephedra products be paired with an appropriate exercise program to gain desired results.

Ephedra Legalities

In 2004, the US FDA banned ephedrine alkaloids from dietary supplements due to their dangers of side effects and adverse health effects. However, it should be noted that the ban does not apply to traditional Chinese herbal remedies containing ephedra.

In the United States, the herbal form of ephedra, typically found in powder form and in tea leaves (Ma Huang) is considered legal – as long as the two ephedra alkaloids: ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, have been removed. It’s the ephedra alkaloids that have been banned in the United States and other countries around the world.

This is not the case in Canada, the United Kingdom or Australia where all forms of the plant are illegal in fat burning supplements.

Because ephedra alkaloids (ephedrine and pseudoephedrine) must be removed, manufacturers of ephedra type products have long experimented with various components, ingredients, and combinations in creating their own proprietary blends as an alternative.

Warnings

The FDA issued a warning on Black Mamba Hyperrush in 2015, stating that after examination and analysis of its ingredients, it contains sibutramine, a controlled substance that has been removed from products in the US since 2010 because of its potential to increase risk of a cardiovascular event.

Sibutramine can drastically increase not only pulse rate, but blood pressure for some, and is also potentially very risky for use by anyone with heart issues.

Black Mamba Hyperrush also contains an ingredient known as phenolphthalein, another chemical substance that has not been approved for use in the US. It’s a potential carcinogenic and cathartic (acts as a laxative) substance. [4]

While a number of bodybuilders, athletes, and individuals who are “just” seeking weight loss tend to shrug off such warnings, it is strongly recommended that any individual leaning toward trying such products examine every ingredient, and then carefully assessed risks as opposed to benefits.

Despite self-promoting marketing and its potent milligram strength, potential consumers should know that not even Black Mamba Hyperrush can do all the work by itself. An appropriate diet, adequate exercise, and exercise intensity is required for muscle maintenance and weight loss.

Common Side Effects of Black Mamba Hyperrush

Common side effects associated with ephedra products, and dependent on dosage as well as sensitivity include but are not limited to:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea (taking the ephedra product with food can help avoid nausea symptoms)
  • Difficulty sleeping due to its stimulative effects
  • Jitteriness
  • Increased sense of anxiety

More serious side effects have also been reported, not necessarily limited to those with a sensitivity to its components. Most adverse events have been associated with the presence of the alkaloids ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, as well as some products that have been altered or ‘adulterated’ with phenethylamines (PEAs).

Conclusion

Though ephedra has a lengthy reputation of being the most beneficial weight loss component to dietary supplements for decades, safety comes down to dosage. Any product, including other energy-boosting formulations, can contribute to a number of negative side effects. So too can excessive levels of caffeine.

Individuals using Black Mamba Hyperrush generally give it a high rating in regard to efficacy, but caution should always be employed. The product is deemed effective by users, but does come with a large number of potential side effects as well as FDA warnings that illegal ingredients have been found in the product.
